Dr May Chan
About
More than looking after patientsβ teeth, dentistry for me is really about making a difference in peopleβs lives.
Itβs something I strive for with every person I see. It is great to be working in a dental practice where youβre encouraged to care for patients this way.
Mayβs back story
Iβm from Malaysia and came to Australia to study. Although Iβve travelled widely since, I am pleased to say I now call Australia home. Itβs helped me realise my professional goals in ways I didnβt imagine.
After graduating from the University of Queensland with Honours, I didnβt want it to stop there. So I continually love to keep at the forefront of knowledge with an abundance of continuing education, which for me, will never stop.
Unlike a lot of kids growing up, I always knew I wanted to work in healthcare. Dentistry held a special appeal for me because without knowing a whole lot about it before starting, I felt it would allow me to incorporate science with practical hands-on work with patients. Having now been practising for a while, I can report that it has definitely done that.
The thing thatβs surprised me most is how attached to the patients you become. I didnβt realise the kind of satisfaction youβd feel when you help them achieve their goals. They definitely donβt teach you this in dental school!
What May wants for Define Dental patients
I truly understand that many people have had negative past dental experiences and just getting to the front door is a challenge. What I want for our patients is to have the experience of coming to see us and getting through their visit feeling pleasantly surprised that it wasnβt as bad as they imagined. I see it as my role to help them do that.
Why we love May
We love that May is like a sponge when it comes to understanding a patientβs needs. Pint-sized she may be, but she has a big heart that places patient care and concern front and centre. For her, making a positive difference is where itβs at.
