Dentures are removable prosthetic appliances used to replace missing teeth. They are designed to look and feel as close to natural teeth as possible.
Dentures are useful for:
- Creating a more confident smile
- Supporting the lips and cheeks
- Improving chewing function
- Improving speech
- Cheeks appearing hollow due to a missing tooth
Dentures are available as partial or complete:
- Partial dentures
Used for one or a few missing teeth
Available with an acrylic (cheaper) or metal (stronger and thinner) base - Complete dentures
Used when all natural teeth are missing
Teeth lining dentures are made from acrylic (softer material)
Dentures donβt have to mean discomfort
As long term denture users experience bone shrinkage - a natural occurrence resulting from missing teeth - periodically, dentures will need to be relined to ensure they continue to fit the wearer. It is recommended relining occur every three to five years.
If there is insufficient bone as a result of jaw shrinkage, implants may need to be considered.
